The Cost of Business A Dragonfire Station Short Story eBook Zen DiPietro

I bought _Translucid_ (Dragonfire Station, book 1) a while ago, but haven't yet gotten at reading past its promising sample. I decided to open this extra today because I wanted something quick, and it was described as able to be read independently of the novels. (It's set between book 1 & book 2.) Fortunately, that is true, though it's even shorter than I realized, since the last 18% of the "book" is just the beginning of Translucid again -- I'm glad I got TCoB for free.

Anyway, the story is a clever and quietly amusing tale of an unsentimental but not unkind master trader's scheming. Finding himself inadvertently in possession of dangerous contraband, he's determined to avoid the entanglement that would ensue from following the letter of the law, probably pointlessly costing him his hard-won and excellent reputation.

There's also a charming additional episode, featuring an adolescent who unexpectedly seeks his advice on the best course for achieving her goals. It serves as further demonstration of his keen and wide-ranging understanding of sentients' psychology and culture.

The writing is generally above average, which makes it surprising that I caught what I believe, based on context, are two confused words. "Proscribed" appears where it seems "prescribed" was intended -- creating the opposite meaning, "forbidden", where it should be "recommended" or even "mandated"! The other error appears twice, relating to a ritual to be performed after having done something wrong: surely it should be "contrition", not "attrition."

Regardless, I definitely enjoyed the story, and will be moving _Translucid_ higher in my (looooooong) Kindle queue.

The Cost of Business A Dragonfire Station Short Story eBook Zen DiPietro Reviews

A short tale that packs a lot of characterization and setting. More than sufficient to intrigue me enough to purchase the longer novels by the author to see if she could maintain this level of writing.
well as a taster it pushes all the buttons and is well written. Its hard to know how a series will be from a prequel short, but this didn't make any mistakes.
This is a very well crafted and fun short story. Unusual character with an unusual problem and a clever solution. Crisp dialog and solid characterization. Impressive! Highly recommended. Will go on to read more about Dragonfire Station in "Translucid."
Like all the Dragonfire Station universe, this Cabot-driven short story set in the later "Mercenary Warfare" arc, is a fun read, with humorous notes, well-plotted story lines and strongly developed characters.
A very short short that adds back story to the Dragonfire world. Likable characters with good motives make this a no body count, good natured read. Zen DiPietro is on the verge of being an author worth keeping an eye on. The Cost of Business moves her closer to that goal. Recommended.
I enjoyed trader Cabot's innovative solution in this short freebie. The glimpses of Briveen culture provided were also intriguing. I'm now trying to imagine a sapient evolved from dinosaurs with cybernetic arms... If the author's goal was to interest me in his longer works, he succeeded. Even better, the longer series is available on kindle unlimited! Book 1 is downloading now...
I didn't expect much from this short story so I was very pleasantly surprised. Though short, it packed a lot into a few pages. I really enjoyed all of the characters and it while it left me wanting more, it didn't end on a cliffhanger, it is a stand-alone story.

Bravo! This is a well-written and interesting story.
